Major aviation security agencies worldwide—including the TSA in the United States, CATSA in Canada, and European airport security authorities—have strict rules regarding sporting equipment. Because a solid piece of wood or carbon fiber can potentially be used as a blunt weapon, cues are classified similarly to baseball bats and hockey sticks.
You will not be allowed through the security checkpoint with a cue case. Even if a well-meaning airline check-in agent tells you it might be fine, the security officers have the final word, and they will turn you back.
How to Protect Your Investment
Since your cue has to go into the cargo hold, protecting it from temperature changes and rough luggage handlers is vital.
- Upgrade to a Hard Case: A sturdy, rigid case is non-negotiable for air travel. It resists the crushing weight of heavier suitcases.
- Eliminate Movement: Pack any empty space inside your case with bubble wrap or microfibre towels. If the cue can rattle, it can warp or crack under impact.
- The Suitcase Method: If you have a two-piece cue, consider packing the hard cue case diagonally inside a large, hard-shelled suitcase surrounded by your clothes for maximum insulation and padding.
For exceptionally valuable or custom cues, many players choose to bypass the airport entirely and ship their cues directly to their destination via tracked couriers.
