Gus Szamboti

Gus Szamboti is widely regarded as one of the great custom cue makers in modern billiards history. Below is a look at his life. His contributions to the craft is what made his work special. Curious as to what his cues tend to be worth today? Read on.
Early Life and Times
Gus Szamboti began making cues in 1969.
Before becoming a full‐time cue maker he worked as a draftsman/designer (for RCA) and applied a lot of precision and workmanship to his cue building.
He was active during a time when cue craftsmanship was shifting from more “standard” blanks and mass‐made parts toward highly individualized, handcrafted cues. His era overlaps with legends like George Balabushka, Richard Black, Harvey Martin, etc.

Style, Successes, and Contributions
What set Szamboti apart:
- Quality of materials: Szamboti is said to have discarded about 80% of the wood he inspected, only using the best pieces.
- Precision and workmanship: He was known for very clean joinery and crafting cues that were as flawless in fit & finish as they were in playing feel. His cues did not warp (thanks to kiln drying, slow turn‐down processes, etc.).
- Design innovations and influence:
- He supplied blanks for George Balabushka in the final years of Balabushka’s career (“the ‘Gus Szamboti era” of Balabushka cues, c.1971-75). These blanks are highly prized.
- His own cues combined functional excellence with elegant aesthetics—balanced shafts, good taper, fine veneer work, precise points, tasteful inlays. He pushed the standard for what a cue could deliver both in playability and in collector value.
Significant Dates
1969 – Gus begins building cues.
1971-1975 – His blanks become essential to Balabushka in Balabushka’s last years; the “Szamboti era” of Balabushka blanks.
September 1988 – Gus Szamboti passes away.
2004 – Inducted into the International Cuemakers Association Hall of Fame.

Output and Rarity
- Total output is relatively small. According to his son Barry, Gus made about 1,200-1,300 cues in his lifetime.
- Each cue took a long time to make—orders could take from one year to eighteen months, depending on complexity.
Because each cue involved careful wood selection, precision, and time, there aren’t a flood of them on the market.
Current Values: What Are Gus Szamboti Cues Worth?
Because of scarcity, heritage, and craftsmanship, Szamboti cues command high collector’s prices. But exact values depend heavily on condition, originality (original shafts, wraps, finish, inlays), whether the cue has provenance, etc. Some guiding benchmarks as of 2025:
- One listing at Cornerstone Custom Cues shows a Szamboti cue priced between US $7,500 to $9,999.
- Another example (restored, fresh condition, with multiple shafts, 58″, etc.) is listed at $20,000+.
- On forums, estimates for desirable Szamboti cues (in good condition) are often in the US $8,000-12,000 range, sometimes more depending on rarity and desirability.
So in summary, many full Szamboti cues might be expected to sell for somewhere between US $8,000 to $20,000+, with some premium examples possibly higher. Spanish/European market might have different premiums depending on import, condition, local demand, etc.

Barry Szamboti – Continuing the Legacy
After Gus’s passing in 1988, his son Barry Szamboti took up the torch and has become one of the most respected names in cue making today. Growing up in the shop, Barry learned the same principles of precision, wood selection, and design from his father. He not only preserved the traditional Szamboti style—sharp points, flawless veneers, and classic inlays—but also introduced refinements that modernized the cues without compromising their heritage. Collectors and players alike recognize Barry’s cues as a direct continuation of Gus’s artistry, with many saying they play and feel almost identical. Barry’s work ensures that the Szamboti name remains synonymous with quality, balance, and timeless design. Much like his father’s cues, Barry’s creations are highly collectible and command premium values, further cementing the Szamboti family’s place in the highest tier of cue making history.
