Recent history
Over the last two decades, 9-ball pool has grown from a niche cue sport into one of the most exciting and competitive billiard disciplines in Spain. Once overshadowed by snooker and traditional Spanish billiards, 9-ball has developed a loyal following thanks to televised international tournaments, modern pool halls, and the success of Spanish professionals on the world stage.
The popularity of 9-ball in Spain began to rise significantly during the late 1990s and early 2000s. During this period, more American-style pool halls started appearing in major cities, introducing players to professional-size tables and international rules. The fast pace and attacking style of 9-ball made it especially attractive to younger players compared to more tactical cue sports. International events such as the Mosconi Cup and the WPA World Championships also helped increase interest among Spanish fans.
Organizing the leagues
Spain’s billiards structure, led by the Real Federación Española de Billar, played a major role in organizing national championships and developing junior talent. Regional federations across the country began hosting ranking tournaments and local leagues, giving players opportunities to compete regularly and improve their standard.
Provincial popularity
Today, some provinces and regions are especially known for strong 9-ball communities. Andalusia has become one of the biggest centers of pool in Spain, particularly in Málaga and Sevilla, where many tournaments and league competitions are held throughout the year. The Valencia region has also built a strong reputation, especially around Alicante and Dénia, where pool halls and local competitions continue to attract players of all levels. Galicia and Salamanca have also become important training and competition hubs due to the presence of elite Spanish professionals and coaching centers.

The pros
Murcia deserves special recognition because it produced one of Spain’s greatest modern players, Francisco Sánchez Ruiz, widely known as “Fran Sánchez.” In recent years, he has become the face of Spanish pool internationally. In 2023, Sánchez won the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in Poland, cementing his place among the sport’s elite players. His achievements include victories in the US Open Pool Championship, the World 8-Ball Championship, and appearances in the Mosconi Cup representing Europe.
Another important Spanish champion is David Alcaide from Málaga. Alcaide has been one of Spain’s most respected professional players for many years and helped Spain win the World Cup of Pool alongside Fran Sánchez in 2022. Spain’s growing success internationally has inspired many younger players to take the sport seriously.
Other notable Spanish champions include Francisco Díaz-Pizarro, a multiple-time European champion in 9-ball, and rising players such as Juan C. Expósito and Mayte Ropero, who continue to strengthen Spain’s presence in both men’s and women’s competition.
Spain is becoming a pool powerhouse
Today, 9-ball pool in Spain continues to grow through local leagues, social media exposure, streaming platforms, and international success. What was once considered a casual bar game has become a respected competitive sport with Spain now firmly established as one of Europe’s strongest pool nations.
